Interview: Antti Innanen, CEO & Founder Dot. Legal Design

Meet Antti Innanen CEO & Founder @ Dot. Legal Design

How did you end up working in the space of law and AI?

I am originally a tech lawyer by trade, so I was always interested in tech and AI. We got super curious around GPT-2, particularly how it could actually understand and generate legal language in ways we’d never seen before, and basically pivoted our work to AI.

And because we were so early, we kind of got the position of ”normal lawyers talking about AI in understandable terms”. But to be honest with you, it was an accident really. I had no plans. Pure curiosity.

Is the regulation around AI at the right level?

I think that AI obviously needs regulation and we could lead the way for ethical and well-designed AI in Europe. By ethical, I mean AI that’s transparent about its limitations and doesn’t make decisions that disproportionately harm people.

Of course this is a balancing act, and the regulation can also stifle innovation.

But also we need to stop blaming the regulation for everything. Builders build, and there is a lot of room to build. The regulation does not make that impossible. Look at all the great companies popping out of Europe now.

You’re heading to Nordic Legal Tech Day in Stockholm on October 15th – what are you most looking forward to?

Sweden is leading the way in many AI-related things. Legora is a top-notch company. Lovable is popularizing vibe coding, basically AI that helps you code through natural conversation rather than traditional programming. So many things happening. I am looking to catch the vibe.

From speakers, I am looking forward to listening to Sebnem Erener, Head of AI Regulatory at Klarna. She’s seeing AI regulation play out in real financial services, so it will be super interesting to hear her practical insights.

And I am looking forward to my speech as well: ”The Future (of Legal Work)”. Come and see the future revealed!

But really, I am not revealing the future or giving the lottery numbers of next week. The future is not predetermined. That’s why it is so interesting. We can shape it!

Come and say hi, Stockholm Legal Tech Day, October 15.

Thank you so much Antti. See you in October! / NLTD crew
