Interview: Lexnova, one of the Sponsors of NLTD 2024

Meet Blendow/Lexnova, Sponsor of NLTD 2024

What unique insights or experiences do you bring to Nordic Legal Tech Day, and what topics or trends are you excited to discuss with attendees?

Lexnova is the market leader and is at the forefront of AI in the sector of legal research. We have implemented and onboarded more than 200 organizations in our AI tool, Legal Assistant since the launch about 8 months ago. Our sister company Blendow Institute, which is the market leader in legal education, has focused on educating and preparing Sweden’s lawyers for how AI will change the ways their profession operates in the coming years. This experience gives us a practical perspective on how AI can be used to enhance legal work rather than replace it. We are well equipped to help organizations with cases of ”best practice.

At Nordic Legal Tech Day we are particularly excited to discuss the ”limitless potential and limitless mistakes” that come with AI. The legal sector has a unique relationship with risk, and AI is pushing us to reevaluate how we handle risk versus opportunity, especially when it comes to training and upskilling. We hope to participate in dialogues about which data is central to the success of companies’ AI projects.

Can you share a sneak peek of what attendees can expect from your presentation or workshop at the event?

Attendees can expect a deep dive into practical AI applications within a legal setting. In our breakout session, Laura and Johan will guide everyone through a real-world use case—we’ll showcase how AI tools can help with everything from summarizing complex documents, to drafting memos, to even creating presentations with AI-generated avatars. Plus, we’re hosting an interactive model ”battle” to compare tools like ChatGPT and Claude, making the session hands-on and engaging for all skill levels.

In your opinion, what sets the Nordic legal tech landscape apart from other regions, and what opportunities or challenges does this present for innovation and collaboration?

The general interest and curiosity to embrace new innovations and new technological possibilities have always been strong in the Nordics. What separates the legal sector from other sectors, for example fintech, is that the digital transformation has been fairly slow. We have been one of relatively few companies who have focused on innovation in recent decades within the legal sector. Many companies in the same sector have moved at a much slower pace in terms of innovation.

Nordic legal tech stands out for its collaborative approach. Here, we see more openness to partnership between firms, tech startups, and public sector entities than in regions like the US and China. This culture of collaboration offers incredible opportunities for innovation. However, we also face unique regulatory and language challenges compared to the US and China. These stricter regulations place different pressures on us, but they also provide an opportunity to turn these challenges into strengths—for example, adapting AI solutions to our specific legal frameworks and multilingual environments.

How do you envision legal technology shaping the future of legal practice in the Nordic countries, and what role do you see events like Nordic Legal Tech Day playing in driving this transformation?

We believe AI will transform legal practice by automating the mundane, freeing up lawyers to focus on more strategic, value-adding work. Legal technology, and AI specifically, will also help bridge the gap between legal professionals and the public by making legal information more accessible. Additionally, the traditional ’billable hour’ concept will gradually give way to more ’results as a service’ models, driven by the efficiency gains from AI.

Events like Nordic Legal Tech Day are critical in fostering dialogue and knowledge-sharing. They’re a great chance for us to collectively demystify AI and break down some of the silos still present in our field. Hopefully we can also get guidance in how to prioritize our resources going forward after we have had the chance to listen to input from our potential customers in this forum.

As a Sponsor and speaker at Nordic Legal Tech Day, what message or key takeaway do you hope attendees will walk away with after engaging with your presentation or session?

Our main message is: AI is not here to replace lawyers; it’s here to empower them. For those feeling anxious about the rapid evolution of tech, our advice is to start small. Experiment, fail, and learn—these steps are all part of the journey. Legal professionals must get comfortable with AI if they want to stay ahead, and this means being proactive about trying out tools and integrating them into their workflows. And remember…AI is king but correct data is King Kong!

Thank you so much Blendow/Lexnova for being a part of NLTD 2024 / NLTD crew
